MailFreddie Lund Trophy

Dear Sir,

I am currently doing a family history for my father's
family. He was first cousin and childhood friend of Freddie
Lund while growing up in the Nelson/ Alexandria area of
Minnesota. I am very interested in knowing what became of
the Freddie Lund trophy for freestyle aerobatic flying and
if you know where I might obtain a photo of it.

Thank you.

MailImportant Notice Regarding the Development of Flight Recorders for IGC Approval

Dear Editor,

1. Anyone even remotely considering development of a FR for eventual IGC-approval should contact the Chairman of the IGC GNSS and GFA Committees (through the FAI office if you do not have their contact addresses).

2. This will enable you to be included in the listing of current and potential future manufacturers of IGC-approved flight recorders. This list is used for circulation of material concerning IGC-approval including discussion on points raised, and in the development of drafts for amendment of the Technical Specification for IGC-approved GNSS Flight
Recorders.

3. Any new designs being considered can then be developed with awareness not only of the published Technical Specifications, but also likely future refinements and updates of IGC requirements.

Bernald Smith,

Chairman of the GNSS subcommittee of IGC

Ian Strachan,

GFAC Chairman.

MailSoar Waves in Patagonia Argentina

Dear Editor,

The Andes mountain range in Argentina presents a new challenge and
opportunity to the worldwide gliding movement. This extensive range covers
the entire South American continent and, in our country, is mostly
orientated north - south. Around the latitude 35º south, the winds are
mostly westerlies and blow at the optimal speed for tremendous mountain wave
to develop (see pictures). This, combined with over 2500km of mountain
range, forms perfect conditions for wave flying.

The 'Cordillera del Viento,' (the Wind mountain range) stretching for some
90km and reaching 2800m in height is, according to recognised experts, the
place where the highest wind gradients of the entire Andes range are to be
found. (Rene Heise, Mountain Wave Project weatherman, Sailplane and Gliding,
Feb-March 2001.

The best place to base your wave hunting expedition in this area is Chos
Malal airport. It has an asphalt runway measuring 1500m x 30m and is a mere
30km from the southern extremities of the Cordillera del Viento, and only
10km from the secondary wave.

The gliding operation at Chos Malal is run by the Neuquina Gliding
Federation which has been in operation since 1991. Today, we are able to
share those years of experience through the work of our instructors who are
always on hand to provide you with a complete introduction flight. They
provide assistance with mountain flying techniques and help you to reach
great heights in the wave!

How can you soar there?
