The December issue of Air Sports International netzine marks the completion of one full year of the magazine on the net. We have had 12 issues released on the first of every month commencing 1st Jan 1998. This is also the time when we change over to our new server in Lausanne, Switzerland. We look forward to being able to give you better connectivity to the netzine with our new server. May I request our readers to write in and let us know in case they find any difficulty in accessing us from the new server ?. In the December issue we have some very interesting stories. Three of these are first person accounts of participants in various air sports. This is a change from our past stories, when we had reports submitted by others. Could we have your reaction to such stories ? We have a story on the life of Peter Riedel. You may already have heard the sad news that Peter Riedel, the last survivor of the first gliding competition on the Wasserkuppe in 1920, died quietly in hospital at Ardmore, Oklahoma on 6th November. He reached his 93rd birthday in August. Reading the obituary one admires a man who was not known to many of us of the later generations. We have a story of two brave men who flew two Quantum 912s from Bangalore in India to Farnborough in UK. The account is by Rory Jeffes, who was part of this expedition. The second personal account - Follow that Bird - is of a gliding safari held in South Australia by one of the participants - Susan Garlick. A racy story of a racy adventure ! The other first person account is of the way the President of the FAI Ballooning Commission, Jean-Claude Weber, celebrated Montgolfier Day. Narrating his own story he has asked others involved in Ballooning to send in their stories of how they celebrated Mongolfier Day ? Indeed a unique way to get to know what others did by setting a personal example. The Centenary of Aviation still continues to make news. We have used the excellent story carried in the Air France in-flight magazine, which details the history from 1898 to 1998. We carry the full story as published to give our readers an opportunity to share the fascinating line up of people and events that have made aviation as we know it today. We look forward to your reactions. Do write in.
