Aims of the FAI World Grand Prix

To Promots and popularise aerobatics - the fine & fundamental art of flying - as an image of precision and accuracy, technical performance and aesthetic perfection.
To Offer a testing bench and a practice field for advanced technologies.
To Arouse vocations for aeronautical careers and to take part in the general development of aviation.
To Stimulate a market for companies associated to the Grand Prix.
To Devlop the artistic aspect of aerobatic demonstrations and flying to music.
To Foster friendly relations between pilots of different countries through a sporting event.

How is the FAI World Grand Prix different to other Aerobatic events?

Different to traditional aerobatic competitions the only international aerobatic competition:
  • to music, since 1990
  • fitting in a 2-hour event for live broadcast (9 solo pilots and 3 formation teams)
  • open to all types of aircraft (piston engines, turbines, jets)
  • open to solo pilots and to formation teams
  • displayed as a yearly series of contests around the world
  • awarding an official world champion title to formation teams and to aircraft manufacturers
Different to traditional air displays

The FAI World Grand Prix team is a civilian team and represents an average of 12 aircraft and 42 people including 12 technicians, 15 officials and management team and 15 pilots

The FAI World Grand Prix can be held anywhere in the world where safety requirements are fulfilled

At each event, the fai world grand prix pilots can perform a 40-minute choreographed air ballet with all participating aircraft, as a gala performance produced by aviators studio.

The FAI World Grand Prix belongs to the family of the Olympic Movement

Judging

The judging criteria for solo pilots are, in addition to safety (disqualification for infringement of the public deadline):

  TECHNICAL MERIT
160K
ARTISTIC IMPRESSION-160K POSITIONING
80K

Use of the full range of the flight envelope -40K     Pleasing and continuous flow of figures - 30K for propeller aircraft, 40K for jets.     The sequence should be centered on the judges position -40K

Exploitation of aerodynamic & gyroscopic forces - 40K     Contrasting periods of dynamic and graceful manoeuvres - 30K for propeller aircraft, 40K for jets.     The sequence must be flown within the performance zone -40K

Precision of the execution - 40K       Presenting individual figures in their best orientation - 40K for propeller aircraft, 50K for jets.

Versatility = Combination of a wide variety of figures flown on different axes & flight paths - 40K    Synchronisation with musical accompaniment - 40K for propeller aircraft, n/a for jets.
Appropriate use of smoke system to underline figures - 20K for propeller aircraft, 30K for jets.

The judging criteria for formation teams are, in addition to safety (disqualification for infringement of the public deadline):

  TECHNICAL MERIT ARTISTIC IMPRESSION POSITIONING

Close formation (positive and inverted), symmetry, constant distance between aircraft (parallaxe correction) - 40K   Pleasing and continuous flow of figures. - 30K

The sequence should be centered on the judges position. - 30K

Formation changes during vertical & turning figures - 30K   Contrasting periods of dynamic and graceful manoeuvres - 30K   The sequence must be flown within the performance zone - 20K

Precision of the execution - 30K       Presenting figures in their best orientation - 40K       Crossings, splits and head-on passes should be centred, symmetrical and superimposed (as seen from the judges position) -30K

Versatility = Combination of a wide variety of figures flown on different axes & flight paths - 30K    Synchronisation with musical accompaniment - 30K

Synchronisation between different elements of the formation team (timing between synchro pair and main formation for example). - 30K      Use of smoke system to underline figures - 20K

The judges are selected from the FAI board of judges.

At the end of each series the "FAI Grand Prix WORLD CHAMPION" title is awarded to:
