Feb 1998

Atul Dev - Editor I am happy to record that the first issue of Air Sports International, as a netzine, published in January 1998, has been well received by our readers. We have also received a large number of comments and recommendations for further improving the publication. These have been noted and every effort will be made to implement these recommendations, if technically feasible.

Some of our friends have also written in to ask about the availability of printed copies ! To them our response has been very disappointing - no more printed issues. But I see their point of view - they would be more comfortable with a printed magazine in their hands rather than reading a netzine on a screen. We advise them to have hard copies printed at their end of just those pieces that they would like to read at leisure. I know we are disappointing some of our readers by not having a paper edition of our magazine but we have to move with the times.

The very concept of publishing a netzine on the world wide web was to allow a greater number of people world wide to get to see it by taking advantage of newer technology now available to us. Note also, how we can reduce the time lag from the time of the event happening to the time you read about it.

As we progress with the evolution of Air Sports International, as a netzine, we hope to further remove delays, give you a better product and use the latest in technology to our best advantage.

In the February issue of Air Sports International we have carried an interview with the First Vice President of FAI, Alvaro de Orleans-Borbon, on new sport aviation discipline - Simulated Flying. It makes interesting reading in the background of the decision taken at FAI to treat this subject as a new air sport discipline. Rules will soon be evolved and proper direction is expected to be given to this new discipline in due course of time. We look forward to these developments and promise our readers that we will keep them abreast of all such developments.

The other stories in this issue relate to events held late in 1997 such as the 41st Gordon Bennett Race, a report of this annual event has been carried regularly in Air Sports International since 1991. Besides this story, we have two stories from the World Air Games. Both are first hand accounts of how the writers viewed the games as participants on the site. One is on the gliding event and the other on the microlight event.

We also have in this issue a 'guide' on how a world championship can be conducted in your 'home town'. An interesting feature based on gliding but equally relevant to all air sports. We hope it will be a useful guide to all those aspiring to host any event in the future.

May I request for a favour from our readers ? Can you help us spread the word about Air Sports International now being on the net ? A brief e-mail message giving your contacts this news will help and I am certain they will appreciate it.

Happy reading.
