As we dive into 1998, the FAI agenda is brimming with important items
which are keeping the FAI administration and officers busier than ever,
Securing the 2001 World Air Games is one item; extensive and complex
negotiations are already in progress for selecting the next WAG
organiser from among the four candidate countries of Austria, Poland,
Spain and Turkey.
A very important slot in the World Air Games organisation was filled on January 7th, 1998, when Mr Srecko Medven (Slovenia) signed up with FAI for a 4-year, part time contract as World Air Games Managing Director and Air Sports Co-ordinator. With hands-on experience developing the World Air Games since 1992, Srecko is eminently qualified for the post as FAI's top WAG man for the 2001 event. TV rights is another hot topic, following FAI's assertion last year of all media rights to all its air sports events. Today, our Statutes and By-laws spell out FAI's media rights very clearly, placing key responsibilities on FAI's Air Sport Commissions. Many event organisers show that they are alert to this new situation, and rights transfer contracts are being processed for a number of events, while the FAI Secretariat assists and advises the Air Sport Commissions on their rights and responsibilities. A number of Commission meetings will take place during February and March, and I am looking forward to seeing results of our common drive to enhance the media value of our events. This is the time to take a long and hard look at our past practices and gear up for the future. Good luck!
