EAA Museum sets Attendance Record

The EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh, one of the nation's top aviation museums, headed into the final few weeks of the year having already welcomed the highest attendance in its 16-year history.

Through Nov. 27, the Museum was visited by 162,289 people, surpassing the single-year attendance record of 162,236 established in 1991. Two major Museum events still remaining, the annual Christmas in the Air celebration on Dec. 13 and Kids' Days festivities on Dec. 28-29, traditionally draw substantial visitation to the Museum.

"Any record attendance, of course, is due to a combination of factors," said Tom Poberezny, President of the EAA Aviation Foundation, which operates the Museum. "The greatest contributing factor, however, is that the AirVenture Museum is an attraction that people enjoy and return to because of its displays, activities and family atmosphere."

Since the Museum opened in Oshkosh in 1983, more than two million people have visited the facility. Along with its status as one of the nation's air museums, the AirVenture Museum is also one of northeast Wisconsin's leading tourist attractions. Each year the Museum draws visitors from every U.S. state as well as thousands of international guests.

There have been two major additions to the Museum since it, along with EAA Headquarters, moved to Oshkosh from the Milwaukee suburb of Franklin in 1983. The Eagle Hangar, honoring the men, women and aircraft of World War II, opened in 1989 while the Eagle Flight Leadership Center and the still-developing "Hangar X" area first welcomed visitors last summer.

Hangar X features a half-scale model of the Lockheed F-22 "Raptor" fighter jet, designed to be the Air Force's frontline fighter in the 21st Century. Future plans include a number of interactive exhibits of particular interest to young people.

A number of other fascinating displays, such as replicas of Charles Lindbergh's "Spirit of St. Louis" and the around-the-world "Voyager" aircraft, have also been introduced since the Museum opened in Oshkosh. In addition, Pioneer Airport flying activities draw interest from May through October each year. During the peak season, more than 130 aircraft are on display at the Museum, covering the entire spectrum of powered flight.

A growing number of businesses and organization are including the Museum as an outstanding facility for meetings and social gatherings. That, along with increased outreach and marketing, are among other factors contributing to the record attendance.

The EAA AirVenture Museum is open every day except New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Group tours and admission rates are available. The EAA AirVenture Museum is located just off Highway 41 at the Highway 44 exit in Oshkosh and is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

EAA Internship Applications On-line

Students interested in summer aviation internships can now learn more about six different EAA Aviation Foundation internships and receive applications through the EAA World Wide Web site www.eaa.org.

These internships, which include cash stipends and are based at the EAA Aviation Center in Oshkosh, recognize, encourage and support excellence among individuals studying the essential technologies and skills of aviation. The internships assist young people who are seeking experience in the aviation community to prepare themselves as future leaders in the field.

"These EAA Aviation Foundation internships were created by sponsors who wanted to provide for aviation's future," said Tom Poberezny, President of the Foundation. "The internships allow young people to explore and discover more about the world of flight while based at the EAA Aviation Center, which is regarded as the home of recreational aviation."

EAA Aviation Foundation internship applicants should be well-rounded individuals, willing to provide support for the EAA Air Academy youth programs and camps, as well as the Air Academy Lodge. Those duties include general cleaning and maintenance of buildings, grounds and aircraft. Moving and securing aircraft are also elements of these positions.

To reach the internship page, connect with the EAA web site then choose the "aviation education" button or type in the page address www.eaa.org/education/internships.

The EAA Aviation Foundation was founded in 1962 and is dedicated to aviation education, preservation and research. Its headquarters are at the EAA Aviation Center in Oshkosh, Wis.
