Welcome to the very first issue of Air Sports International on the
Internet. For the past seven years Fédération Aéronautique Internationale
(FAI) has been publishing the magazine in the print format. In 1997 a
conscious decision was taken, first by the FAI Council and later at the FAI
General Conference held in October 1997 at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that for
greater reach we must make use of the latest in communications technology,
thereby changing the printed magazine into an on-line publication on the
web only. The result of that decision is this magazine - some like to call
it a netzine ! - that you now have on the screen before you.Air Sports International will be published as a monthly henceforth. It will be on the world wide web on the 1st of every month. We are indeed acutely conscious of the fact that while the reach of our netzine, no doubt, will increase, the readership profile will also undergo a change. From now on, the reader in our mind's eye is a 25 year old simulated flying enthusiast (PC owner with Microsoft FlightSim) who is interested in taking up an air sport, is not sure which one, and has an intelligent general interest in aviation and in what is going on around the world. We will, however, cover all activities of the various disciplines of air sports being conducted any where on the globe. We will continue to be the official mouth piece of the FAI for dissemination of news and views, stories and articles, results and records and anything that is connected with aviation sports. The first issue of the netzine has tried to cover as broad an area as was possible. We have carried columns from the President and the Secretary General as well as the regular pages of Air Waves - News from FAI - and other important events, News bits from the corporate world, World Records homologated by FAI, articles and reports from world and continental events. All that you had in the printed version but now delivered to you a lot faster and in a new format. We in the Ground Crew - the Editorial and Production team - look forward to your responses and letters. To record your responses we have also added a Letters to the Editor column. In the first issue we carry stories from the World Games at Lahti, a detailed Report on First World Air Games and reports of Gliding and the Long Range Air Race which were all part of the World Air Games. We are also carrying reports from Saga '97 and the 20th Australian Free Flight Society Championship. We now offer a very fine platform for advertisers. Advertising on our site will pay rich dividends to corporate bodies selling products in any way connected with air sports. That is the message that we feel our readers can pass on to the potential advertisers. Do spread the news and let us make our netzine the most sought after web site on the world wide web. We have catered for links to all the FAI pages and to other aviation sites. Thus we can claim a one-stop status in aviation sports. So do pass the word on to help friends stop by. Happy viewing ! Happy reading !! Happy surfing !!!
