24 June 2001 - First Report of the day

After several delays again yesterday at least 36 pilots finished programme #1 (known compulsory). It is expected that the rest of the pilots will complete the programme early afternoon and than the beginning of programme #2 (unknown programme) will take place.

Because of our delay in flying, only a small delegation headed by contest director Jaime Julve, could join the official opening ceremony at Sevilla.

24 June 2001 - Second Report of the day

Flying starts again delayed around noon. After three contest flights flying was stopped again due to much crosswind and for a new wind checking. After it was found out, that the used wind measurements system was not sufficient and exact wind measurement was not available, the continuing of the contest was postponed again for the next day. In the meantime the organizer should solve this problem by hiring a new operator with instruments, which fullfil the requirements.

26 June 2001- Second Report of the day

When everyone arrived at the airfield in the morning (26 June), the weather situation was very strange and unusual. It was hazy and the visibility was very poor. This situation lasted until noon and when it finally cleared the first competition flight could start at 1:30 pm.

At 4pm flying has to be stopped again because of strong winds. Due to the fact that strong winds persisted throughout the day, the contest had to be cancelled for the day at 8 pm.

At least fourteen flights could be completed.

28 June 2001

Another successful day in Palma del Rio with the free programme of 44 pilots being completed. It was only disturbed by the fact that an incorrect arrow box marking was not removed from the prior contest day which resulted in two protests.

With the completion of this programme, the championship is a valid competition. The results after the 3rd programme will be send by the scoring office.

At the time this report is written, programme #4 the unknown 2 is in progress.

30 June 2001

Flying of programm # 5 (the second time the free programme) startet after 10 a. m., and it was decided, that two groups should fly, and flying should be finished at 3 p. m., which was also agreed by the board of judges. But due to the wind direction it was not possible, to use the expected judges position in the south. Judges had to sit in the eastern position and therefore flying had to be finished already shortly before 2 p. m. due to the position of the sun, and group 2 could not be completed. At least group one was counted for the overall final results. For the team results the results after programme 4 (which was the last programme, flown by all pilots) were counted. After several organizational difficulties in the first week of the competition resulting in lot of delays in the last days it could reached a good progress in flying and at least four programmes for all pilots and in addition programme five for one third of the competitors out of seven programmes could be counted. The weather during the competition was fine, but at a temperature of around 40 degrees Celsius in a dusty terrain pilots and all people who had to work for the contest, especially the judges, would have preferred sometimes to sit at the swimming pool instead of flying and working.

At 21:30 p. m. the victory ceremony and local closing ceremony took place at the airfield - the 9th World Glider Aerobatic Championship as well as the 2nd Glider Aerobatics World Air Games Championships were over.
