The March issue of Air Sports International is now before you. Considering the season in the Northern hemisphere, I knew I would have a difficult task in trying to get you the latest from the sports aviation arena. The few events that were due to be held were either cancelled or dates shifted. Then I was banking on the Round the World Ballooning record attempts to pick up some exciting stories. Unfortunately they have all been called off due to weather or politics. We have still managed an interesting issue. We carry in this issue the results of the Young Artists' Contest held last year and results declared in October 1998. To mark FAI's arrival in the Olympic Capital, Lausanne, children around the world were invited to imagine what a poster might look like advertising air sports in the Olympic Games. The results of the children’s imagination is reproduced in this issue. Frost Outside, Fun Inside is a delightful piece on microlight flying by David Bremner, reproduced from the Jan/Feb 1999 issue of MF. This piece adds a very valuable first person account to the collection of stories that we have carried in the past. Wings in the Future by Anthony Smith is yet another article devoting itself to looking into the crystal ball to try and guess - or see - the future of aircraft and flying. Another valuable addition to our articles on the future of aviation. It took me just one request to get the article on Gliding in Germany - Bavaria Glide - by Janet Hider Smith. She was indeed most prompt with her response and as any professional, kept to her promise and sent in an excellent piece on gliding in the Bavarian hills. She has also sent in some very good pictures to illustrate the experience. I trust you will enjoy reading this piece as much as the pilots enjoyed participating and enjoy as much as the organisers who did an excellent job of organising the event. We must send out a special thasnks to Janet who do did an outstanding piece of work in producing this story for us so promptly. In this issue we also carry a piece written by Hans Akerstedt explaining some of the Ballooning Records. This is, perhaps, the first time we have had some one write on the rationale behind some of our records. It would of interest to see similar articles written on records of other air sports. Happy viewing !
