2nd World Air Games
2001 Ballooning Events

The Real Federación Aeronáutica Española selected Andalucía for several
reasons as the ideal place to conduct all the different air sports
participating in the World Air Games. The selected competition area
for the ballooning events is Sevilla. The events that will be hosted

Event Dates
The WAG 2001 Organising Committee proposed the last week of June
as the optimal dates for the events. Certain events to start at earlier

midday heat, is best achievable during the long days of June. The

Location Details
The area for the ballooning competition
covers an area of 35 Km NS and 50 Km EW to the West of Sevilla,
divided in the middle by the Sevilla/Huelva motorway (free) giving
excellent access to all parts of the
competition area. The area is
excellent for ballooning with few power lines, no mayor built up areas,
good land owner relations, large
fields (up to 1 sq km) and during June the majority of the fields
will have been recently cropped.
Farms with animals are very unlikely to be found in this area and
a single PZ is marked.
Weather Conditions
The winds in the morning generally
come from the NE at ground level, N between 100 and 300 m agl andE
from approx. 500 m agl. Thermals start from about 10:00 so early morning
flying at 07:00would give a possible 2 to 3 hours safe flying.
Evening winds generally come from
the South or South West, fast, dying around sunset allowing a shortevening
flight.

The National Institute of Meteorology
will be responsible for meteorological briefings and WAGforecasting.
State-of-the-art equipment is used by the National Institute of Meteorology
to gather pertinentdata and transmit the latter to the different competition
locations.
Airspace restrictions for area
The competition area is under the
Sevilla TMA, which allows to fly under VFR conditions with no majorrestrictions.
A general clearance will grant competitors to fly up to 10,000 ft.
AGL in the western 80% ofthe area, having a eastern zone closer to
Seville with a maximum altitude of 3,000 ft AGL.

Landowner restrictions for area
Several pilots fly frequently in this
zone and the landowner relations are excellent. The teams will bewelcome
to use most of the fields for take off and landing, and we will organize
special blanketpermissions for the large land extensions where it
may be difficult to find the owner during the event dates.
