Great Mag -- Missing Calendar
From : David Habercom

Atul,

Just a quick note: The online ASI is really impressive. Very fine job. I will come back to this site regularly.

A problem: I looked for the dates of the 99 World Glider Championships and could not find it, even though the front page mentions a calendar of upcoming events. Maybe a direct jump to the calendar would be appropriate.

Super super job! Thank you!

Regards,

Comments on "poison pawn"
From : Alvaro de Orleans-Borbon

Dear Air Sports,

A comment/question on "Poison Pawn", a beautiful article, even understandable & enjoyable for "low-energy" glider pilots like myself.

To evaluate the correctness of aerobatic maneuvers, could we carry on the aerobatic plane an accurate differential GPS recorder, and visualize later on a PC what "we did" against what "we should have done" - including all the otherwise hard-to-evaluate data, like the exact speed at every point of the maneuver, etc.?

Did anybody already try this? It may also help to achieve an objective scoring in competitions.

FAI Netzine
From : Eilif J. Ness

Dear Atul,

This is to congratulate you on a most interesting and engaging Internet Magazine issue.

This April's Netzine was a real treat from end to end: engaging, interesting, unique and informative, all to the best of standards. I had already read (and immensely enjoyed) Prince Bonaparte's 1913 article when you alerted us by email. Both that and Durantis article were real pearls.

My only worry now is how you will be able to keep up this standard.

Best regards, and again, congratulations!

First Aviators
From : Wendy Coble

Dear Sir,

I have been referred to you by Thierry Montigneaux. I have been hired by a non-profit organization known as ICARUS to find and write about the first pilot of each nation to fly a powered, manned, controlled, heavier-than-air craft. For our purposes, it does not matter where the flight took place, nor was it necessary for the pilot to have a license. Our definition of nationality is based on place of birth, unless the person in question chose to go by another nationality. (C.T. Weymann was born in Haiti, but got very angry with Paris newspapers referring to him as Haitian. He said he was American. Jorgé Chavez was born in Paris but said: "Yo soy Peruano!")

The book, tentatively titled 100 Aviators, is designed to celebrate the centennial of flight with a biography of the first pilot from the first 100 countries to have a pilot. As you can imagine, this is a mammoth task, but I have been very fortunate in my research, and have found early pilots for over 120 countries. Some of these names are familiar, and are generally accepted as having been their country's first pilot, (Alberto Santos-Dumont, the first Brazillian, Mario Calderara, the first Italian, J.T.C. Ellehammer, the first Dane) others are based solely on the fact that their flight was the first I could find made by a pilot of their nationality.

Because of this ambiguity and the possibility of error, I have contacted every foreign Embassy in the United States, and a few in London and Paris, requesting information on their country's first pilot. Some have been very helpful, others, regrettably had no information, and still others did not reply. I have contacted aviation museums around the world with predictably the same results. While I feel I have been as thorough as possible in gathering data, I realize that there is information I missed. It is for this reason that I write to you.

G.W. Meadows, an FAI representative here, sits on the board of directors at ICARUS and suggested that perhaps you could mention this research in your magazine. We both agreed that your magazine might be able to reach people to whom I have not previously had access. There are undoubtedly pilots about which nothing has previously been published or is unavailable in American or European sources. I would also appreciate the opportunity to check my research with knowledgeable sources in each country.

Could a request for international information be made through your magazine? I appreciate any suggestions you might have and thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Wendy M. Coble
